Spend your money once

People in my inner circle know a twenty eight year hobby of mine is renovating older homes.  Yes, I have been known to never miss an episode of “This Old house” or “Holmes on Homes”.   Mike Holmes of “Holmes on Holmes” is a stand up contractor who helps and reworks home improvement projects that were not done corectly for one reason or another. Mike is often quoated a saying “spend your money once”.

In the automotive service world nothing is more important than spending your money once.  It seems almost daily that I am talking to a frustrated consumer about their automotive woes.  Often for any of the most common reasons:  the vehicle was misdiagnosed by another shop, the repairs where made elsewhere and not done correctly, parts were installed the vehicle may not have needed   or “the last repair shop only has a ninety day warranty”.  Situations like these are very sad to say the least.  They are damaging to the consumer in terms of frustration and lost dollars. While every person on this planet enjoys the satisfaction of finding a bargain, automotive service needs to be shopped for carefully.  It is risky to shop for this service on price alone.

When shoping for a repair shop check them out!  With the internet at our finger tips this is not difficult. First look for the shops online reviews or ask friends and coworkers for a reference.   Ask yourself if you are comfortable with what people are saying, keeping in mind not everyone can be pleased!  Visit the shop, walk in, take brochures, ask questions, and join their email list!  All this can be done without spending a penny.

The little bit of time you will spend searching for a competent repair shop will pay dividends in knowing your vehicle will remain safe, reliable and repairs will be kept to a minimum. Remember spend your money once!

Smart car or darned car, you decide…

The other day I answered the phone and talked with a customer with a four year old German car that would not start. The customer explained to me that AAA had come along to jump his battery and he was on the way to our shop to get this problem corrected. I explained to our customer I would first test the battery, depending on the condition of the battery we may possibly need to check the alternator and the electrical system.

A little while later when it was time to work on this gentleman’s car I grabbed the battery tester and first inspected the battery. The tester displayed “Bad Cell”, for a battery this is the equivalent of “dead on arrival” I phoned the customer and explained that he needed a new battery and he shouldn’t need any additional testing. Wow was I wrong! Please read on.

The battery was installed and the car delivered back to the customer. The next day the car needed another jump to get it going. The customer called in and we brought the car right back in. Now it was time for more investigation. Out came some test equipment and I went back to work. It was discovered one dome light was left on and the radio was drawing a little too much current even with the car off. Could this be all, not so fast! I took the car for a quick road test and parked it. As I was walking away from the car I noticed the parking lamps on. I walked back to the car to shut off the paring lamps and guess what? The light switch was off! There was nothing I could do short of disconnecting the battery to extinguish the parking lamps. Back to the drawing board I went. An internet search of this problem revealed the central electric module may need to be recoded. This module is responsible for turning on and off the lights. All the light switch does is, ask the module to turn on or off the lights. Apparently this is a common problem on the vehicle when a battery fails. So I grabbed my scan tool and plugged it into the vehicle. I accessed the central module and sure enough it was waiting for a code. Guess where I got the code? The module gave it to me! I typed this code into the scan tool and pressed enter…all was well, the lights shut off.

It is only my opinion that some of the cars we drive are over engineered and while they usually work well they can sure ruin your day when they don’t!
